The band

The name 'Milky Way Gas Station' might sound new to you. Nevertheless, this Dutch prog-rock band already exists for a few years and decided to release their first album Somewhere / Anywhere before going on stage. 

The band members come from different outskirts of the prog universe. They found each other in the simple truth of a real song: start with an acoustic guitar, blend it with synth or hammond, add some drums and bass and there you go. Some songs have odd time signatures but still sound like 'regular' songs. Even if they last for about half an hour. Finding the exit of a song sometimes just takes some time...

The album Somewhere / Anywhere

Due to the perfectionism of the band, it took a while before the album was finished. The motto was: we can do better. One might think that working for five years on only one album is a waste of time. But when people like Joakim Svalberg (Opeth), Lana Wolf (Country Legends and backing vocalist for several bands and artists) or Jan-Peter Bast (Thé Lau, The Scene, a.o.) offer their support for this album, why throw away this opportunity? We take pride in having had the chance to work with these and other magnificent musicians.

There were however other time consuming factors like a round the world trip of the drummer, re-takes of songs and even re-re-re-takes of songs. And by the time they thought that they were there, the band found out that they were one member short. After intensive search the missing link was found. But a new band member has of course his own ideas about the songs. 

Anyway, Milky Way Gas Station thinks this album was well worth the wait. It's time to discover for yourself if you agree. You can find your copy here, on this site in the webshop. But you can also get it at the venues MWGS performs, download the album from iTunes or check it out on Spotify.

Deze Nederlandse band kwam voor uit een bijeenraapsel van progliefhebbers. Ze sloten zichzelf op in een studio, schreven nummers en startten de opnames. Behept met een overmaat aan perfectionisme klusten ze jaren aan hun debuutalbum.

De basis van alles: gewoon mooie liedjes maken. Beginnen met een akoestische gitaar of een lekkere Hammond-uithaal, en dan... . Ja, MWGS is kwistig met de oneven maatsoorten en ja, sommige nummers passen met gemak op één kant vinyl. Maar het blijven liedjes. 

Vijf jaar werken aan een album zonde van de tijd? Nou, als er mensen als toetsenist Joakim Svalberg (Opeth), zangeres Lana Wolf (Country Legends, backing vocals bij menige band en artiest) en toetsenist Jan Peter Bast (o.a. Thé Lau, The Scene) langskomen om mee te werken, dan is de tijd nemen een uitstekend plan.  We zijn er trots op met deze geweldige muzikanten te hebben mogen samenwerken.

O ja, er kwamen ook een wereldreis van de drummer en diverse heropnames tussendoor. En heb je alles opgenomen, blijk je toch echt een man/vrouw tekort te komen. Gelukkig kwam ook die op ons pad. En na wat inwerktijd, waarna alles uiteraard weer opnieuw moest (want een vers bandlid bleek ook een andere dynamiek en dito ideeën op te leveren) was de plaat dan eindelijk klaar - en MWGS een vast bandlid rijker in de persoon van JP Bast.

Het was - en gezien de reviews zijn wij bepaald niet de enigen die dat vinden - het wachten meer dan waard.
